Lint-free cotton cloths, microfiber towels, untreated paper towels, newspaper or old, clean cloth diapers work great.Be sure to use enough Windex® product to remove all the dirt and change cleaning towels as they become soiled.
Choose lint-free
Microfiber or other lint-free towels won't leave behind little specks on glass surfaces. Newspaper or old, clean cotton diapers are other great options.
Even water can leave unsightly spots on microfiber upholstery! But a spritz of Windex can work wonders. Simply spray the surface lightly—careful not to soak the fibers—then brush very gently with a soft-bristled scrub brush, working in the same direction. Tough stains might require a second application.
Inside, you can fill a bowl with water and use a rag to wipe off any dirt. If you're working on the inside of a window, it's a good idea to lay a towel across the sill to catch any drips. Use a cotton swab or toothbrush to get any grime out of the corners. At this point, don't worry about streaks.
Instead, substitute your paper towels for something more practical, like actual cloth. Lint-free cotton cloths, like microfiber cloths are great options for glass cleaners. Price-friendly, versatile and guaranteed to leave your surfaces lint-free.
Microfiber cloths are absorbent cloths that can be washed and reused to clean windows, leaving them clear, shiny and streak-free. These are best used to apply cleaning solutions to windows, scrub them clean and wipe them dry. Best of all, they are soft and pose no risk to your windows.
Microfiber is great for removing debris from your mirrors and windows without scratching your surface. Streaks form when you don't clean properly before drying, that's why we always recommend using the softer more absorbent green microfiber towels first to clean your surface as best as possible.
Mix one part distilled vinegar to 10 parts warm water in a spray bottle. Wipe down the window with a a soft, clean, lint-free microfiber cloth or paper towel to remove dust before you spray your solution, then spray the entire surface.

Granite or marble
This is a big NO. “Windex shouldn't be used on granite or marble kitchen tops. Cleaners like Windex can etch or dull the surfaces of natural stone,” says Rick Glickman, president of Dream Kitchens, a design studio in Highland Park, Illinois.
You can use Windex® Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner on your car's tinted windows, mirrors, glass, chrome, stainless steel, plastic, and vinyl surfaces. For a streak-free shine, clean car windows when the surface is cool and out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
Glycol ethers have been linked to reduced fertility (both in men and women), anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, liver and kidney damage, and more. According to Women's Voices for the Earth, this window cleaner harmful ingredient is found in Windex Aerosol.
A big problem is the evaporation rate. If you're cleaning your windows on a warm sunny day, the liquid part of the solution evaporates quickly and leaves behind a residue that appears as streaks. On the other hand, if you don't entirely remove the liquid you can also be left with a streaky window.
After nearly 40 hours of reading, researching, spraying and wiping, we determined that Windex is the best window cleaner available. It's powerful enough to break up grease and food stains on a variety of surfaces without leaving behind spots or streaks.
Pro cleaners use squeegees inside all the time, even in houses with stained and varnished woodwork. When cleaning windows with a squeegee indoors, the key is to squeeze most of the soapy water out of the scrubber to eliminate excessive dripping and running.
Use a microfiber cloth.
Microfiber cloths will remove bugs and dirt from the outside of your windows and leave a clean, streak-free finish. Make sure to use a separate microfiber cloth than the one for the inside of your windows.
Simply shake out the dust and dirt. Use cold water. Add a few drops of mild soap that is bleach free and which does not contain fabric softener. Let the cloth soak in the soap for a few minutes and then rinse it clean in cold water.
Cleaning Windows from the Outside
Start by rinsing the windows with the hose, then fill a bucket with clean, cool water and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Using a soft microfiber cloth, go over the surface of the window. For higher windows, use a sponge mop (or a soft cotton or microfiber mop) on a pole.
Don't use an absorbent paper towel or cloth treated with fabric softener to spread the solution because you'll also end up leaving lint and film behind. To avoid streaks use an untreated paper towel, newspaper or lint-free cloth. According to Windex, old cotton diapers (unused, of course) are a good choice.
Some folks like drying panes with newspaper, but you're better off reusable microfiber cloths. "They are super absorbent, washable and leave the glass shiny and streak-free," Forte says.
Light gauzy material. A scrim or gauze is a very light textile made from cotton, or sometimes flax or other materials. It is lightweight and translucent, which means it is often used for making curtains. The fabric can also be used for bookbinding and upholstery.
While you might think that a simple spray removes all, not properly treating these spots is the leading cause of streaks—when you go to wipe down the rest of the mirror with a clean or solution-sprayed cloth, the greasy or oily residue just spreads across the surface of the glass with each sweeping motion.
