Yes, it is possible to tile directly to our Gyproc moisture resistant (MR) grade boards without any pre-treatment, following the tile adhesive manufacturer's guidance.
Yes, you can paint, plaster, tile or decorate moisture-resistant plasterboard after fitting it - just like standard plasterboard and most other types available.
Should plasterboard be primed? Yes, apply an acrylic based primer such as BAL Primer (undiluted) to the plasterboard with a brush or roller and leave to dry before applying any powered adhesives. All board joints and internal corners should be reinforced using a suitable alkaline joint tape before tiling.
The purpose of a cement backer is to create a surface for you to tile onto. The surface is straight and flush; taking away the worry of an uneven wall or floor. As it is cement, it is resistant to mould, rotting and moisture damage meaning it is the perfect backer for showers, kitchens and bathrooms.
You can tile straight onto membrane waterproofing, as long as the surface is smooth and non-porous. Liquid waterproofing should not be tiled onto directly, as it needs time to cure before a tile adhesive can be applied.
Do I need to use a primer? Yes, with the exception of substrates covered with a waterproofing membrane due to its non-absorbent nature. We recommend the use of a primer on all other substrates to be tiled. By not using a primer, you can void your product and tiling system warranties.
No wait time is required. A water test should be performed before setting tile to verify a successful waterproofing installation. This evaluation may be required by building code officials and is considered best practice.
Here's how to add your tile over your Hardie® Backer cement board: Wipe the surface of your Hardie® Backer cement board clean with a damp sponge. Spread the modified thinset with a notched trowel appropriate for the size of tile you are installing. For best results, comb the ridges in one direction only.
It's wise to seal cement board with a layer of waterproof sheeting to prevent water from seeping through and into the boards, which could cause mold growth or compromise the integrity of the structure/wall. You may also seal the cement board with thin-set mortar.
Hardie Backer Board:
As with fibre cement board, priming HardieBacker board (a type of cement backer board) is not typically required before tiling, as it is designed to be directly tiled over without the need for a primer.
If primers aren't used, there's a significant chance that your tiles could fail in the future - in other words, they could crack or come loose. There's a number of reasons why, including: If a dusty wall is unprimed, adhesive could just stick to dust and not adhere to the substrate itself.
Apply a Waterproof Membrane:
To provide an extra layer of protection, it's advisable to apply a waterproof membrane on the entire surface that will be tiled. This membrane serves as a barrier against water penetration and helps prevent any potential leaks.
It is indeed possible to skim moisture-resistant plasterboard and it is recommended that a bonding agent is used before starting the skimming process, though some people in the building industry believe that it is possible and easier just to skim directly onto the moisture-resistant plasterboard, so it is a matter of ...
Can I Tile Directly Onto Cement Board? Yes, cement board is the perfect base for tiling, as it's waterproof and provides a smooth, even surface that won't be disturbed by moisture.
Moderate Kitchens, toilets etc. Moisture Board can be installed by either Dot & Dab (Direct Bond) or dryliner method.
A multi-use synthetic polymer primer and admixture, BAL Bond SBR can be used as a bonding agent for adding to mortars used in screeding, plaster, rendering, bricklaying, pointing and repairs and as a primer for tile fixing onto timber, plaster, screeds, rendering or vinyl tiles.
Spread Mortar
It's used to bond ceramic or porcelain tile and cement backer board. With the smooth side of a 1/4-inch notched trowel, spread enough mortar for one sheet.
Using thinset between the backerboard and subfloor will create additional strength, fill in any potential gaps that exist and lessen the possibility of movement. For less than $10/sheet, we highly recommend taking this extra step to insuring your floor will last and stay in warranty.
Plywood may be the more budget-friendly option, but it is less moisture-resistant and stable than cement board. Cement board is better for areas with movement, water exposure, and subfloor imperfections, like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. But plywood is an acceptable choice if your subfloor is dry and stable.
Backer board is a building material especially suited as a tiling base for tiling wet areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and showers. This is because it is resistant to permanent water damage and does not need to be treated before tiling.
Modified dry-set cement mortar (also known as latex or acrylic modified thinset)
Use the easy-to-install cement backer board that offers industry-leading strength and performance. Helps protect tile installations from moisture penetration and inhibit the damaging effects of water thanks to a cement composition that maintains its strength, integrity, and tile adhesion even when wet.
The product is dry when it turns solid red with no pink showing, normally 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Depending on ambient conditions, drying time can take up to 12 hours. A water test can be conducted 72 hours after application if required. Clean tools and hands with water before material dries.
Once the waterproofing membrane's been installed – and after it's been left undisturbed for a couple of days to properly cure – it's time for the tiles to be put on wherever they're required.
For most installations of KERDI-BOARD, tile can be installed right away.
