When placing the bed in the corner of your bedroom, keep in mind that you need to leave a minimum of 24 inches between the bed and the wall to make the bed each morning. We advise that you also leave 40 inches between the bed and any dressers or cabinets to allow for easy access to drawers.
The ideal place to position a bed is usually considered to be right at the centre of the longest wall in the room. As the most important piece of furniture, the bed should be the focal point and this positioning truly puts it in the spotlight. Placing the bed at the centre of a wall gives the room focus.
Many rooms just mandate a bed on an angle. Placing it against the walls makes the space feel stale and sticking it straight out into the room might take up all of the available floor space.
Since there was no long wall for the bed or a window centered on a wall, the option that worked best was placing the bed on an angle in the corner between the two windows. This works because the bed is centered between the two windows and their draperies, which makes the bed look balanced.
By positioning the bed in the middle of the room, the seating area, the work station, the sleeping area, and the outdoor space, all have their own place in the newly divded room. Better views were also a benefit of placing the bed in the center of the room.
Most experts that a bed should be at least 24 inches away from a wall. Following this measurement creates breathing room, makes space for a headboard, and reduces the chances of the bed scuffing or running into the wall.
Feng shui — which considers spatial relationships in relation to the flow of life energy, or chi — usually would come out strongly in favor of pushing the bed up against the main wall of a bedroom. But it warns against doing so if there are bathroom drainage pipes or gas pipes running through the wall.
In bedrooms, there are limited ways to place something as big as a mastress, and in many situations, placing your bed in front of a window just works best. We're here to tell you that's ok. In fact, it makes for a strong focal point, especially when paired with dramatic drapery panels, wall decor, and striking shapes.
It is recommended that you allow at least 24 inches between the bed and the wall to get out of bed, and 36 inches between the end of the bed and the bedroom or bathroom door.
In general, feng shui warns against placing your bed in front of a window, as too much energy will flow out of the window, causing restless sleep. Sometimes, however, placing your bed in front of the window is unavoidable or may be preferable.
Positioning your bed in line with the door is the worst possible position, according to the principles of Feng shui. People who practice Feng shui call it the 'dead man's position' or the 'coffin position' because the feet or head face the door and resemble how we carry the dead through open doors from the house.
Commanding Position
You want your bed located so that when you're lying in bed, you can see the door to the bedroom. However, you don't want to be directly in line with the door either. A good rule of thumb is it places the bed diagonal from the door.
We want to perceive the world as it truly is. When your bed is placed underneath a window, it may create challenges for those sleeping in the bed. When there is a window behind the bed, there is less security because a window is more fragile and, often, operable, which makes you feel less safe while you're at rest.
The recommended sleeping direction per vastu shastra is that you lie down with your head pointed southward. A north-to-south body position is considered the worst direction.
Effects of sleeping with head towards west
The west is not a Vastu recommended direction to sleep, as per Vastu. Sleeping with one's head pointing towards the west direction can increase restlessness.
Some people have a superstition that sleeping with your feet facing the door is bad for your health because dead bodies are taken out of a room feet first. Some people also have a superstitious fear of being dragged out feet first by ghosts and spirits.
However, if your bed happens to be positioned with your feet pointing toward the door (known as the “death position” in feng shui and to be avoided whenever possible), a footboard or substantial piece of furniture at the foot of your bed will help to provide a buffer or protection from the drain of life force.
If you cannot place your bed on the wall opposite the door because of windows or other fixed features, you may place it on the same wall as the door.
Where Should You Put a Mirror in Your Bedroom? Mirrors should be avoided in bedrooms because they can cause bad luck and nightmares. However, if there is a mirror in your bedroom, move it to not face the bed. You can also cover it with a veil or curtain during the night to avoid negative energy from multiplying.
Make sure the duvet is pulled to the edge of the cover towards the door. Shake it out well so that it's smooth inside the cover. Then tuck the loose part of the duvet into the side against the wall and after you get off the bed from doing that just smooth it and pull it tight on the side towards the door.
Allow a minimum of 30 inches around each side of the bed and at the end of the bed. For a more elegant and luxurious feel leave a minimum of 36 inches around each side and at the end of the bed. You might of course have a single or double against the wall, and a crib against the wall with no clearance at the ends.
Amount of Space to Leave
Space around the bed is especially important. A general rule of thumb is to leave around 18 to 24 inches around the sides and foot of the bed with 36 inches being the ideal.
Standard Bedroom Size
The average bedroom size is about 132 square feet while there are bedrooms much larger than even 144 square feet. The basic guideline to bear in mind while allocating space for a standard bedroom is that it should measure at least 120 square feet to comfortably accommodate a full-size bed.
A standard king-size mattress is roughly 6 feet 4 inches wide and 6 feet 7 inches long (76 inches x 79.5 inches), so it will fit into a 12 feet x 12 feet bedroom.
