If the existing natural oil-based coating hasn't cured, only use a natural oil-based paint to cover it. To cover an alkyd paint that hasn't cured, use an alkyd or a natural oil-based paint.
Latex paints will not stick to oil based paints. The exception is that an oil based primer may accept any kind of top coat paint. For that reason, an oil based primer is recommended to be applied over any oil based top coat, then a water based paint may be used as a top coat.
Points of Caution: Disadvantages to Consider
While alkyd paint is undeniably impressive, it's not without its quirks. Projects might face delays due to its longer drying times. Being less green, it emits a higher VOC content, and users might witness a yellowing effect over time, particularly in sun-deprived regions.
There's no problem applying over oil. Just scuff sand and degloss it first.
If you're an oil painter who doesn't like to watch paint dry, then alkyd oil paints are for you. Alkyd oil paints—or simply, alkyds—can dry to the touch in less than 24 hours, which makes them ideal for someone who uses multiple layers of glazes, paints wet-into-wet or travels to paint.

Primer Application: Apply a high-quality primer specifically designed for urethane alkyd paint. This will promote adhesion and enhance the durability of the finish.
You can paint older oil-based paint without sanding, but it's not always the best idea. If the oil-based primer or paint is in good condition, you may be able to get away with just painting over it. However, if the paint is starting to chip or peel, you need to sand it down before painting over it.
Alkyd paints continue to cure after they have dried (16 hours). Maximum hardness and abrasion resistance for an alkyd paint usually takes 3-4 weeks.
The poor adhesion leads to the painted surface flaking. After a while, water-based paint on top of oil-based paint will crack and can peel off in large chunks – leaving you back at square one and creating one hell of a mess.
However, an older form of paint is alkyd paint. It's commonly known as an oil-based paint, but it doesn't actually contain oil. Paint is typically made of three components: the thinner, the binder, and the pigment. In a latex house paint, the thinner is water, the binder is latex, and the pigment is acrylic.
Step #1: Know the Different Paint Roller Cover Types
Nylon/Polyester—Suitable for water-based paint like Regal® Select Interior on any substrate; resists matting and produces a smooth surface. Natural Fibers—Suitable for an oil- or alkyd-based paint; primarily made from lamb's wool or mohair; works on any surface.
If you do not dull the surface by using a high grit sandpaper or synthetic steel wool between coats you will not get good adhesion and the paint can repel the next layer that is applied.
If the paint does NOT come off, it is oil-based paint and you will need to prime the surface with a bonding primer before applying latex paint. The primer can be latex, but it has to be a product that is made to prepare the surface and help with adhesion and that says “bonding” on the label.
Painting with oil based enamel paints is still a popular choice among painters because they produce a hard, glossy, and smooth finish once they have been dried. In this case, they make a great choice for high-traffic areas like doors, windows, and trim, since they are extremely durable.
The general or most commonly used oil painting mediums include Linseed Oil, Liquin and Walnut Oil. You can also get meglips, burnt plate oils, stand oils, blending and glazing mediums, impasto and cold wax mediums, solvent-free gels, damar varnishes and a product called Maroger Painting Medium.
So what is the purpose of SW ProClassic Satin Water-based Acrylic Alkyd paint? This paint is ideal for smooth interior surfaces. It is an interior waterborne paint, and Sherwin Williams recommends using it for interior trim, bookcases, and cabinets.
When paint remains tacky to the touch and refuses to dry, the issue often lies with quality of the paint. But the problem may also be linked to your painting environment (in terms of humidity and temperature) or application issues like failing to prepare the surface properly or not letting the paint dry between coats.
One of the weaknesses of alkyd paints is the tendency to yellow with age. Yellowing is accelerated in the absence of light (e.g. behind pictures) or if the dry paint is exposed to fumes from ammonia or the amines in epoxy paints.
Should you sand in between coats of paint? Sanding between coats of paint is a step that some might consider skipping, but it's a game changer in achieving a flawless finish. Think of each coat of paint as a new chapter in a book. Sanding between these chapters ensures clarity, cohesion, and a polished narrative.
They are Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer, and Behr Bonding Primer. These top two primers were the very best at bonding in both the 24 hour test and the 38 day test.
Poor paint adhesion is one of the most common consequences of skipping the sanding step. Without sanding, the cabinet surface remains smooth and may have a glossy finish or residual substances that hinder the paint from properly adhering.
Fully compatible with oils.
Alkyds can be mixed with regular oils and are reduced with the same solvents. TIP: In order to speed up the drying time of regular oils, I often substitute a few of my most frequently used oil colors for alkyd colors, such as white and ultramarine blue.
Instead of pigment suspended in oil, alkyd paints are typically formed by an alkyd resin dissolved in a thinner. Most commercially available “oil-based paints” are made with pigment suspended in a solution of an alkyd resin and a petroleum-based solvent such as naptha.
Preparing surfaces for alkyd paint is important to ensure a smooth, even, and long-lasting finish. Before applying alkyd paint, make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, dirt, and grease. Lightly sand the surface to create a rough texture for the paint to adhere to.
