Wash the liner in warm water using a small amount of laundry detergent and 1/3 cup of bleach. Adding a few white cotton towels to the load will help with the agitation and also prevent the curtain from wrinkling. Hang the shower curtain liner on the rings so it can dry. Never put a plastic liner in the dryer.
Do not throw this in the dryer. Hang it back up in your shower and let it dry naturally. Even low heat will melt it in the dryer.
Once the wash cycle is complete, shake out the curtain and hang it back up on the shower rod to air dry. While some fabric curtains can be tumbled on low heat in the dryer, plastic or vinyl curtains should only be air dried. Check the care label before attempting to put fabric curtains in the dryer.
Don't put mats in the dryer. Let them air dry. It's best to hand wash and air dry the ones with the cheap rubber backing because even the washer cycle might tear the backing apart destroying the mats. The dryer definitely will damage them.
How to Clean a Shower Curtain Liner. Simply take down the curtain and toss it in your washing machine. Add a bath towel to help with scrubbing the shower liner. Make sure you keep it on the gentle setting to avoid damaging the liner.
Mix 1 part vinegar with 4 parts water in a spray bottle. Saturate the curtain or liner with the cleaning solution. Scrub stains with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse the curtain or liner with warm water.
Shower Curtains & Shower Curtain Liners: Every 6 Months
If you have a plastic shower curtain liner, it's easy to see when mold, mildew, or other buildup has accumulated. You can wash it with a diluted bleach solution and a sponge, throw it in the washing machine (hang to dry), or just toss it and purchase a new one.
Machine Drying
If your bath mat is made of cotton or other machine-washable material, you can dry it in the dryer. Before putting it in the dryer, make sure to remove any excess water by squeezing or pressing it gently.
Heat degrades rubber quickly and you'll need to replace your bath mat more frequently, and can even potentially damage your laundry appliances. To be safe, always air dry rubber-backed mats.
Generally, it's recommended that you set your dryer to low heat and leave them inside for 10 to 20 minutes. Some dryers will have a tumble-dry-low setting, which would be our recommendation for the best option to choose when it comes to drying.
Fold the moldy areas inward so you don't spread any mold spores. Toss the shower curtain and liner into the washing machine with a couple towels. Add ½ cup of baking soda into the machine with a normal amount of laundry detergent. Run the washing machine on a warm, gentle cycle.
You can put them in the dryer. It might be a good idea to consider drying your curtains on a gentle cycle with low heat for a maximum of ten to fifteen minutes. This will help to get the wrinkles out as well as assure the longevity of your curtains.
As soon as you get out of the shower, wipe the floor and close the curtain so it can fully dry out. Shower curtains are prime targets for mildew.
After washing, however, you should always hang a plastic liner or curtain up so it can air dry. Never put plastic in the dryer.
While you should clean out your shower at least once a week, you only need to clean off your shower curtains every one to three months. Simply wipe down your shower curtain with a disinfecting agent and rinse it off afterward.
Never put synthetic materials such as rubber, plastic, foam, or pieces of cloth that have been used to sponge up flammable liquids in the dryer, even if previously washed. Clean the lint out of the exhaust pipe and the rear of the dryer regularly.
No Soaking Wet Clothes
Clothes that are soaking wet or dripping are heavy and this added weight in a standard dryer could damage it as it spins the load around. Always let your washer fully complete its spin cycle before removing the damp clothes and putting them in your dryer.
Wash your bathroom rugs on the cold setting with a gentle laundry detergent. Hang your mats outside to dry or tumble dry on the lowest setting. You should never use heat when drying plastic- or rubber-backed bathmats because it can cause the backing to crack or even melt.
Check your care label for drying instructions. Generally cotton, chenille and polyester rugs can be put in the dryer on the low setting. Hang dry memory foam mats to help maintain their shape. You should also hang dry mats with rubber backing; they are one of many things that should never be put in the dryer.
These mats can be line-dried, tumble dried or hung over a radiator but leave plenty of time for drying as their heavyweight construction means that they may take a little longer than usual to dry out. One way of drying or removing excess water that we would caution against is ring-drying by hand.
While most rubber bath mats can go into the washing machine, it's important to read your bath mat's care instructions just to be sure. If your bath mat's rubber backing shows signs of damage, you may want to hand wash it instead, as any pieces of rubber that may break off can clog or damage your washing machine.
According to Annie Chiu, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of The Derm Institute, there's a clear guidance on when to make the swap. “Generally, you should change your towels every three to four uses,” she says. “This helps prevent the buildup of bacteria and odors.”
Frequency of Washing
“Ideally, you should be cleaning your shower curtain liner regularly,” Carson explains. “The overall consensus is that it should be sprayed down at least once a month, in addition to replacing them every six months.”
