A: Painting should work, without any need to remove the existing finish, and you have a choice of spray paint or brush-on. Replacing your hinges with ones that have a brushed nickel finish wouldn't be terribly expensive.
When in doubt, I turn to my trusty friend Blue Magic. Pair Blue Magic and fine steel wool and you'll get a shiny, chrome finish on brass plated items.

When I painted our metal cabinet, I used painting brushes. I started by cleaning and lightly sanding the surface to make sure the paint would stick well; brushed on a coat of oil-based primer and let it dry completely. Add 1 oz. of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner to 1 cup of water in an empty spray bottle. Apply. Spray the solution onto the brushed nickel surface and let it sit for a minute or so.
“Faucets with black, bronze, or gold-colored coatings and finishes may get damaged or discolored by the vinegar's acidity. Vinegar also has a strong odor, though it's not toxic. However, if you're cleaning with it, it's always a good idea to ventilate the space.
However, please don't leave it on any surface for too long, as vinegar can erode it, weakening the metal and making it more susceptible to rusting. Mixing baking soda with vinegar also helps prevent rusty odour, as sodium bicarbonate is a natural deodoriser.
So what is my best advice for mixing brass and nickel finishes? Keep your cabinet hardware in the same finish and lighting in a new finish! It creates a warmer tone in your kitchen and thus a much more inviting space for entertaining.
