Yes, you can over backwash your pool. Backwashing too often wastes thousands of gallons of water, unbalances your pool chemistry (requiring costly chemical adjustments), and actually makes your filter less efficient, as a slightly "dirty" sand or D.E. filter traps smaller debris better than a perfectly clean one.

With time the sand in your filtration system will break down into smaller particles and get out into the pool.
