If your air conditioner continues to turn off after 15 minutes or less, or even only minutes after turning on, it is short cycling. Short cycling should always be addressed and corrected.
Your air conditioner should run in nice, consistent cooling cycles – not flipping on and off every few minutes in a constant loop. If you notice this erratic short cycling behavior, it could indicate your capacitor is struggling and lacks the juice to keep those motors running smoothly.

Poor Airflow
If something blocks the flow of air, your AC needs to go into overdrive to make up for it, which could result in it overheating. And when your AC overheats, it shuts off to give the system a chance to cool down. Once cool, it turns back on again, and the vicious cycle of short cycling continues.
Refrigerant leaks not only compromise the cooling capacity of your AC system but can also lead to short-cycling. Low refrigerant levels disrupt the cooling cycle, causing the system to cycle on and off frequently in an attempt to reach the desired temperature.
Several issues can cause short cycling, such as an oversized HVAC system, a clogged air filter, or a malfunctioning thermostat. Low refrigerant levels or a blocked evaporator coil can also force the system to shut down prematurely.

A bad thermostat can be detected when your AC or furnace is not turning on, your HVAC systems are not turning off, the thermostat not responding, your HVAC system is short-cycling, the room temperature not matching the temperature displayed on the thermostat, and the programmed setting resetting themselves.
To unclog an AC drain line, turn off the power to the unit. Locate the drain line and use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out the clog. Flush the line with water using a garden hose or cup of water. Check and clean the drain pan under the indoor unit.
Clogged or dirty air filters can disrupt airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down before a heating cycle is done. Change your furnace filters regularly - every 1 to 3 months, depending on the filter. In addition, ensure the return air vents are not blocked by furniture or drapes.
This means the compressor will run for 10 minutes, stop for 10 minutes, and repeat the cycle two more times during a single hour. You can tell a system that's short cycling when it turns on and off three times in five to ten minutes.
Short AC Cycle
Since we know a cycle should last between 15 and 20 minutes, it's safe to say that 10 minutes is on the lower side. Also, if the cycles are normal but the cooling period is less than 7 minutes, this should also be cause for alarm.
Frozen evaporator coils are a common cause of short cycling. Sometimes, air conditioners freeze up when they're running while it's too cold outside, usually at night. In other cases, freezing may be caused by a dirty filter or a mechanical problem.
One of the most common reasons why an AC unit may short cycle is that its air filter is dirty or clogged. Your AC air filter has the important duty of trapping airborne contaminants before they can get cycled into the system and around your home.
