You can change the color of your laminate floors by staining, painting, replacing them. Most people choose to recolor their laminate floors when they begin to look old, unattractive, or want a different color in their home. Once done, it's usually best to apply a sealant to your laminate floors.
If your laminate flooring starts looking scuffed or dull, you can stain or paint it to revive it. Sweep it well and run a mop over it first. Then, use a washcloth to apply a laminate floor finish over the surface.
Laminate flooring cannot be sanded and refinished like real wood flooring and would have to be replaced when worn out or scratched. Laminate floors are very popular in high trafficked areas like Kitchens.
A laminated floor needs priming before it's ready to accept a paint job, otherwise, the dried paint won't stick well. You can use your usual latex priming coat for a laminated floor, though keep in mind that you need to make sure that the primer dries before you start with the paint job.
The question that many homeowners want an answer to is how to stain laminate? When staining any surface, the common practice is to sand the surface before staining it. However, in the case of laminate, you can stain laminate without sanding it. You can stain laminate in two ways; use a gel stain or latex craft paint.
Latex paint is recommended for laminate surface painting projects because of its durability and smooth finish.
Painting laminate flooring offers a completely different look, but you can also just stain your laminate flooring to give it a richer colour. Smoky shades can look great and add a vintage feel to rooms. Staining laminate flooring follows most of the steps above – so cleaning and sanding first.
To effectively whitewash laminate flooring, clean with dishwashing soap, grit with fine sandpaper, and vacuum clean the dust. Apply a light coat of primer, allow it to dry before applying your whitewash with a paint roller or a painting brush.
Laminate flooring is a durable, versatile product made to resemble wood or tile floors. Its tough top layer is permanent and cannot be stained or varnished. Laminate floors come in many styles and colors and are simple to install.
If you're planning to paint the laminate a dark color, you can skip the primer altogether and paint on one of these enamel paints. Beware that painting over damaged laminate will not result in a perfectly smooth surface.
Chalk paint is a great choice for painting laminate cabinets because it “hides” brush strokes. If you're using chalk paint for a project, you pretty much can't mess it up.
It may be easier to stain the floor twice than to have the floor darker than you wanted, perhaps even requiring replacement. Stain lighter laminate for a darker finish. Laminate wood is a pressed wood composite with a plastic finish to hold the pressed layers together.
Fortunately for those with laminate cabinets, gel stain works well on a variety of surfaces other than real wood — allowing you to stain your cabinets without leaving them a streaky, splotchy mess. You could choose to use Minwax Polyshades to stain laminate, or a similar brand.
A sure way to recognize wood laminate is when the grain does NOT follow through your piece. Wood Veneer is a sheet or thin layer of 'quality-natural-hardwood' that is adhered to a lesser quality wood surface. Wood Veneers give the impression of a more desired quality wood without being as costly.
Step 3 – Paint
Some will tell you to use laminate paint but I love milk paint for laminate so I would recommend that. Use your roller to paint the flat surfaces and a brush to carefully paint the detailed areas. Let it dry per the paint can's instructions. Apply another coat or two as needed.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint will adhere beautifully to laminate. All I do is clean my piece to remove any residue or dirt and then apply the paint.
When chalk paint isn't properly protected and sealed it can chip and scratch pretty easily.
It doesn't have to be a specialist primer and a 2 in 1 paint and primer will work too. Our Furniture Paint goes one better and is a 3 in 1 primer, paint and finish. So you just need one product for your job.
Valspar cabinet paint is readily available and can be used for painting cabinets, laminate cabinets, wood trim, and more. Using a brush can often result in brush marks but it does work well with a roller or a sprayer.
The Zinsser Oil Based Primer is recommended for this purpose. The water-based primer I love also adheres well to laminate, but I prefer the oil-based primer. You will need a smooth foam roller to apply two coats of your Zinsser Oil Based Primer. Between coats, the coats should be dried properly.
Paint a little bit of chalk paint on the flat surface of your laminate (so it's super easy to remove if it doesn't stick). Let it dry for 24 hours and then try to scratch it off with your fingernail. If it sticks really well, then you're good to paint the rest of your laminate furniture with chalk paint.
Laminate is not an ideal surface to paint, but it can be done. If you consider the paint job a temporary solution until you can invest in new cabinetry, you'll probably be more satisfied with the results.
INSL-X STIX Waterborne Bonding Primer is one of the best primers for laminate furniture. This primer is made specifically to bond to surfaces that are hard to coat, and will give you a smooth, level finish.
