Ikea recommend you attach them to the wall. Although they recommend that on everything. So literally speaking, they are freestanding, but aesthetically they more like fitted IMO.
“With all clothing storage, IKEA requires them to be attached to the wall,” he wrote. “Unlike other wall anchor brackets for IKEA products, the PAX brackets require them to be mounted flush against the wall for the most support (fully loaded with clothing these units can be very heavy.)
If your ceiling height is lower than 95 2/3 inches (at least for the frames we used), then you can't stand them up or else they'll get stuck on the floor and the ceiling. Instead, you have to build them standing up in the closet.
If you are installing it inside a walk-in closet or a currently existing regular closet space, you do not need doors. If you are installing your PAX as a freestanding unit, you will need doors.

Remove Baseboards Behind and Beside Wardrobes
This allows the wardrobes butt up against the walls and look built in. We did that in this wardrobe, inside the closet, but you can also see in in one of our previous pax wardrobes when we added them to an open wall in our bedroom.
While we chose to install our IKEA PAX wardrobes first and carpet after so that the wardrobes were sitting on the wood subfloor where they're most stable, in our old house our wardrobes were installed on top of the carpet and that worked fine too.
The ikea website states "Our PAX fitted wardrobes come in two different heights and depths. There needs to be at least 1/2" clearance between the top of the wardrobe and the ceiling."
They also come with neat wall fixing brackets so they can be securely fixed to your wall. Two brackets are located inside each frame, however screws for fixing to your wall are not provided.
Easiest solution is to fill with expanding foam, when set rake it back and fill. A more fiddly solution is to buy something like ex 10X30 strip, trim it to match your ceiling and fix in place.
A) Get a wooden board and put behind the wardrobe in the top to even out the fact that there's a panel in the bottom (baseboard or what you want to call it) and then nail that to the wall and finally nail the wardrobe to the wooden board of the same width as the bottom panel / baseboard.
The fact that they are customisable is what makes them so great. However, what makes the PAX wardrobe system so good is the same thing that makes it so complicated to assemble. These wardrobes come in many parts which you have to choose when ordering. For example there are the frames.
We can cut down your PAX sliding door or hinged door wardrobe to fit into a smaller gap for a stunning wall to wall effect.
The PAX wardrobe comes in 2 heights: 236 cm and 201 cm. With the 236 cm version you will have a clearance of 38 cm. With the 201 cm, you'll have a 73 cm margin. The height difference will let you play around with different options for the best fit — like LEGO.
Some Important Numbers to Keep in Mind
A clothes closet should have a minimum depth of at least 24 inches deep, so the clothes can clear the back wall. Shelves for women's shoes should be spaced about 6 to 7 inches apart. Shelves for folded clothes should be placed around 12 inches apart.

Answer – It does not really matter, but we recommend you fit the wardrobe first and lay the carpet up to it. By doing it this way, not only would the floorboards be a better base for the wardrobe, but it will save a lot of time and money later if you were to change the carpet at a later date.
