I've used chalk paint for other projects like painting laminate cabinets. If you have laminate countertops that get light use (like in a laundry room) and are in need of some love and like the look of slate, then keep reading! All it requires is some paint and a brush. No sanding or anything else fancy is needed.
Many recommend a water-based acrylic primer, paint and top coat. Acrylic paint dries to provide the hard surface needed for heavy-use areas like countertops, while water-based acrylic paint cleans up with water and is low on odors. Either way, you'll want to create proper ventilation in your kitchen while painting.

Most chalk paints only need one coat but I did two to be safe. I used a basic paintbrush to get into the crevaces then a sponge roller to give it an even coverage. I sealed it with a clear poly and let it dry for 2 hours. I gave it a second coat and let it dry overnight.
If your chalk paint isn't sticking - and your furniture looks like it is repelling the paint - take these steps! Step 1: Wipe off any wet paint in the areas where it isn't sticking. Don't let it dry and then try to add more. If you can intervene and wipe off as much of the wet paint as possible, that's the best!

You can start painting the countertops as soon as the primer is completely dry. Mix and pour some paint into the paint tray and use a fresh paint roller cover to apply it to the laminate countertop. Be sure to overlap each stroke to ensure you're maintaining a wet edge.
Use a Countertop Paint Kit

Step 6: Seal the Surface. Very lightly rub the dried surface with fine-grain steel wool. Wipe away and dust with a tack cloth. Use a non-yellowing, oil-based polyurethane to coat the painted surface with a smooth roller.

Painting Countertops

Use a Countertop Refinishing Kit
Countertop resurfacing kits are like paint on steroids. These kits include an epoxy-like paint and decorative stone chips to create the look of natural stone. Most kits are designed for making over old laminate counter surfaces.
Paint a little bit of chalk paint on the flat surface of your laminate (so it's super easy to remove if it doesn't stick). Let it dry for 24 hours and then try to scratch it off with your fingernail. If it sticks really well, then you're good to paint the rest of your laminate furniture with chalk paint.
Chalk paint adheres to furniture beautifully without the use of primer and (usually) no sanding. A quick cleaning is typically all you need.

And typically, brand-loyal reps will say “such and such chalk paint brand doens't do this …” BUT if you are going to polyurethane OR polycrylic (and even wax sometimes) to seal your chalk painted wood you risk the tannins from the wood bleeding through the paint and yellowing the poly!
Chalk Paint Cracking
Chalk paint cracks when the furniture wasn't cleaned well before painting. Dust and furniture polish can stop paint from sticking to the surface. How to Fix It: If the cracks are deep, you may need to sand the piece. Then seal it with shellac, let it dry and then paint another coat of chalk paint.
