Direct Sowing Lettuce Don't bury them; this dusting is just to hold the seeds in place until germination and shouldn't be any thicker than the seeds themselves.

I filled it with regular garden soil and then just scattered the lettuce seeds on top, not too close together. After that, I just added a little soil over them. This type of sowing is called broadcast-sowing. You can use this method for many different vegetables.
The easiest way of scattering them is just tossing them wherever you want them to grow. Remember that some seeds need a cold period (cold stratification) so tossing them even in the wintertime isn't a bad idea!

Looseleaf Lettuce - so named because these lettuces do not form a compact head. They are the easiest lettuces to grow, and normally the most tolerant of heat and cold. Looseleafs are also the fastest to mature and the most nutritious (along with Romaine below).
Although lettuce grows fastest in full sun, it is one of the few vegetables that tolerates some shade.
Lettuce seeds germinate poorly in warm summer soil since heat may cause seed dormancy. Lettuce may bolt in response to the stress of high temperatures, and the leaves may become bitter as the plant puts its growth into flowering (see photo at right).
Radishes are one of the fastest vegetables to grow, taking just 3-4 weeks. Seeds can be sown into prepared ground or pots of potting soil. Make sure you sow the seeds very thinly, spacing them about 2.5cm apart.

Can I Just Throw Grass Seed on Bare Spots? Throwing grass seed onto bare spots will result in little-to-no germination and will not help to repair lawn spots. If you want to fix patches on grass, you need to properly prepare the bare spots before laying down the seed.
Use a spray bottle to moisten the soil. Keep the seeds moist until they germinate in 7-10 days. Once seedlings are large enough, they can be transplanted outdoors. Lettuce seedlings should be several inches tall with multiple leaves.
Should I Plant Lettuce Seeds Or Plants? Lettuce is so easy to grow it can be started indoors for early transplants or sown directly in the garden. In fact, doing both is recommended to get maximum production. Start some lettuce seeds indoors in peat pots a few weeks before the last frost date in your area.
Place your lettuce seeds about one and a half to two inches below the soil. The soil covering the seeds should not be densely packed. Water every other day at the most. You could easily water twice a week when sprouting lettuce plants to increase your chances of healthy plants.
