Some Calphalon cookware carries a Dishwasher Safe seal on the bottom of the pan; check your cookware for this emblem. Stainless steel cookware is typically dishwasher-safe, but we recommend handwashing to preserve its luster. Before first use, hand-wash your cookware with warm, sudsy water and dry thoroughly. Use a liquid dishwashing detergent and a nonabrasive sponge or soft-bristle brush.
Stainless steel is an alloy formed of iron and chromium. This alloy creates an inert surface which protects the underlying metal from corrosion. Not only does this make your favorite stainless steel cookware dishwasher-safe, it also renders it virtually rust-proof.
It's not really the dishwasher, it's the soap. It can be abrasive to hard anodized aluminum. But the worst that can happen is some discoloration in spots.
Calphalon Classic TM stainless steel cookware is dishwasher safe when using automatic dishwashing detergent without bleach or citrus additives. However, hand washing is recommended. Use a liquid dishwashing detergent and a non-abrasive sponge or soft bristle brush.
Use a dry, green Scotch Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge and rub it in the same direction as the grain of the dry pan. Follow by hand washing the exterior, hard-anodized aluminum surface with Bar Keeper's Friend® cleanser.
Technically, yes—stainless steel cookware can go in the dishwasher. But just because it can doesn't always mean it should. Certain types of stainless steel can become warped or corroded in the high-heat, high-pressure environment of the dishwasher, meaning you should hand wash.
Look for a Dishwasher Safe Symbol
You'll also often see water drops or lines along with the dishes. Most pots and pans have an engraving on the handle, while most dishes are labeled on the bottom side. Stainless steel is dishwasher safe; aluminum is not.
Cast iron, enameled cast iron, non-stick, and most aluminum pots and pans should never be put in the dishwasher. The high water pressure, heat and detergent will remove the necessary oils from cast iron, damage or remove non-stick coatings, chip enamel, and cause discoloration on aluminum.
In general, you want to replace nonstick pans after five years. But you need to be particularly careful with nonstick cookware produced before 2015, as it may contain PFOA. If your cookware dates back to 2015 and earlier, it's likely time to replace it even if it doesn't contain PFOAs.
Dishwasher use and exposure to acidic detergents or other unapproved cleansers can reverse the hard anodization process and cause the aluminum surface to lighten in color. This is a cosmetic change only and pans continue to be safe for food preparation.
What do I have to do before I cook for the first time in my Calphalon cookware? Should I season it? Before using any Calphalon cookware for the first time, wash in warm, sudsy water, rinse and dry thoroughly. Most Calphalon cookware does not require seasoning.
Our products are safe, and compliant with with all applicable federal and state safety regulations.
Cast iron, steel and tin: Pots and pans made from certain metal materials, such as cast iron or steel, are susceptible to rusting and should typically not be cleaned in the dishwasher. Hand wash these items instead.

If available, use the pots and pans dishwasher setting. If your dishwasher doesn't have this setting, select the longest cycle – give that baked-on food a little extra oomph! The pan of steel is now stainless again. But it'll get dirty again, too—that's the occupational hazard for all your kitchen items.
The goal of these symbols is to tell people how to care for their cookware, so it doesn't get damaged. They are universally used across most items. The dishwasher safe symbol is a square with two circular plates inside and lines running across it.
18/0 is another grade of stainless steel, and is usually used for items that aren't heated. 18/0 products contain no nickel, making them completely dishwasher safe.
For the dishwasher's stainless steel surface, you can spray undiluted white or apple cider vinegar on it and wipe away any stains or dirt. Next, wipe the door down with a cloth dampened with water to remove the vinegar residue.
Dishwasher soap is abrasive and will compromise the non-stick treatment on these pans.
