Benjamin Moore Advance – this hybrid alkyd paint is both alkyd and water-based, meaning that it adheres well to oil-based paint.
There's no problem applying over oil. Just scuff sand and degloss it first.
oil based primer + any water based paint will work.
If oil-based paint (either an alkyd or natural oil formula) has fully cured, it can be repainted with either alkyd- or natural oil-based paint. Oil-based paint is considered fully cured when it has hardened to the point that it can be scrubbed or washed without affecting the finish, which can take seven to 30 days.
The glossy surface of oil-based paint makes it difficult for any other paint to bond. If you apply water-based paint directly over oil-based paint, it will flake and crack as the water-based paint pulls away.
Use on interior and exterior surfaces including woodwork, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, brick, painted metal and properly prepared glossy surfaces†. Use under or over water-based or oil-based paints.
If you're an oil painter who doesn't like to watch paint dry, then alkyd oil paints are for you. Alkyd oil paints—or simply, alkyds—can dry to the touch in less than 24 hours, which makes them ideal for someone who uses multiple layers of glazes, paints wet-into-wet or travels to paint.
Points of Caution: Disadvantages to Consider
While alkyd paint is undeniably impressive, it's not without its quirks. Projects might face delays due to its longer drying times. Being less green, it emits a higher VOC content, and users might witness a yellowing effect over time, particularly in sun-deprived regions.
You can use any paint over oil-based paint as long as you use the right technique and primer. Always remember that oil and water paints will not adhere together. So, you must follow extra steps to make these two paints compatible.
The advantage of the slow-drying quality of oil paint is that an artist can develop a painting gradually, making changes or corrections if necessary. Oil paints blend well with each other, making subtle variations of colour possible as well as more easily creating details of light and shadow.
New surfaces should be fully primed, and previously painted surfaces may be primed or spot primed as necessary.
As Moon mentioned, water-based paints have improved greatly and are much more durable, so the need for oil-based paint is virtually nonexistent. Because water-based is now the industry standard, there's a much wider range of products and colors.
Sherwin Williams ProClassic vs.
Furthermore, the Advance is less pricey, thicker, lasts longer, and is practically odorless vis-à-vis the ProClassic. This doesn't make the latter automatically bad; the Advance is just a little better.
Advance was created to take the place of Satin Impervo. Satin Impervo is an oil-based paint that could not pass many states' environmental requirements. Ben Moore Advance is a waterborne, low VOC paint and clean-up that replaces Satin Impervo.
Step #1: Know the Different Paint Roller Cover Types
Nylon/Polyester—Suitable for water-based paint like Regal® Select Interior on any substrate; resists matting and produces a smooth surface. Natural Fibers—Suitable for an oil- or alkyd-based paint; primarily made from lamb's wool or mohair; works on any surface.
If you do not dull the surface by using a high grit sandpaper or synthetic steel wool between coats you will not get good adhesion and the paint can repel the next layer that is applied.
One of the weaknesses of alkyd paints is the tendency to yellow with age. Yellowing is accelerated in the absence of light (e.g. behind pictures) or if the dry paint is exposed to fumes from ammonia or the amines in epoxy paints.
Conventional alkyd paints dry by solvent evaporation and cure by oxidation in approximately five days to a hard, glossy finish that is simply unmatched by latex paints. This makes alkyds well-suited for interior trim, doors, cabinets and other high-use areas that require smooth durability.
However, an older form of paint is alkyd paint. It's commonly known as an oil-based paint, but it doesn't actually contain oil. Paint is typically made of three components: the thinner, the binder, and the pigment. In a latex house paint, the thinner is water, the binder is latex, and the pigment is acrylic.
You can use a latex primer over oil-based paint as long as it is a bonding primer. Bonding primers are best because they are formulated to adhere to glossy surfaces, such as oil-based painted finishes.
This all-purpose water-based undercoat primer-sealer can be used over or under any oil-based or water-based paint and is ideal for new construction and remodeling.
Oil-based will seal the wood better and block any tannin stains that might bleed out. Oil-based is also ideal if blocking smoke and water stains as well as unwanted odors. Choose water-based if priming indoors where ventilation may be poor and in spaces sensitive to strong odors.
