Just like one wrong measurement can make or break a recipe, choosing the wrong sized light fixture can seriously disrupt the design of a space. We recommend a happy medium between too big and too small—that way the fixture is harmonious with the scale of the space without overpowering or feeling oddly small.
As a basic rule, for a single fixture in a room, add the room's length and width (in feet) to get the ideal diameter of the fixture (in inches). For a fixture over a table or island, it should be half to three-quarters the width of the table or island. Factor in ceiling height, room scale, and function as well.
There's a sweet spot when it comes to chandelier size in relation to the room dimensions. Too small, and it gets lost; too large, and it overwhelms the space. A good rule of thumb: add the length and width of the room in feet, and that number in inches is a good diameter for your chandelier.

If you're doing two pendants, just make sure they're not larger than 24 inches in width or diameter. This ideal max size is calculated by subtracting 12 inches from the 36 inch width of your island (read more about this in our guide to light sizing).

For example, a 10' x 10' room would convert to 20”. So the recommended chandelier width is about 20”. Finally, leave at least 7' of space between the floor and the bottom of the chandelier. For example, a room with a 9' ceiling should have a fixture with an overall height no larger than 24”.
The rule for ceiling lights centers around ensuring adequate illumination for the room's size and purpose. Typically, multiply the room's square footage by 1.5 to determine the total wattage needed. For layout, aim for even distribution, avoiding shadows and glare.
When choosing a light for your vanity, make sure that you select the right size based on the size of your vanity. In general, aim for a fixture that is 4 inches smaller than the total size of your vanity – essentially 2 inches shorter on each side.

Deciding whether to have matching light fixtures in every room boils down to your personal aesthetic, the functionality of each space, and the mood you want to set. While matching fixtures can create a unified look, diversifying allows for greater expression and functionality.
For a more specific measurement, start with seven feet and add three inches for every foot over an eight-foot ceiling height. Adversely, for ceilings under 10 feet, hang your light fixture with a seven-foot to 7.5-foot clearance below.
One that is too huge can dominate the area and make it feel claustrophobic, while something too small can look out of place and possibly not give enough illumination. Choosing a light fixture that is proportional to the size of the room is a common rule of thumb.

3: Coordinate Across Rooms in an Open Floor Plan
It's important in this type of floor plan to be consistent across all rooms. This doesn't mean all finishes or styles have to match, it just means the overall feel of all three rooms should flow well together.
The chandelier's bottom should be at least 7 feet above the floor. For every foot of ceiling height, raise the chandelier by an additional 2–3 inches. For instance, if you have a 10-foot-high ceiling, choose a chandelier that measures approximately 20–30 inches in height.
For an average 12′ x 12′ bedroom, you would need around 4,000 lumens of light.
In a room smaller than 10′ x 10′, we suggest a chandelier between 17″ and 20″ wide. For rooms about 12′ x 12′, try one between 22″ and 27″. It's all about balance! Always make sure your light fixture fits well within your space.
