The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that doors should be a minimum of 36 inches wide. While residential doors generally don't need to comply with this standard, some do anyway — especially newer homes built with older adults and individuals with mobility concerns in mind.
The standard door width for bedrooms, bathrooms, and other interior rooms in modern homes is 30 to 32 inches. However, you might also find smaller standard door widths for bathrooms, basements, utility rooms, and pantries, especially in older homes.
The standard size for a front door is 36” x 80”, or about 3' x 6'7”. Beyond this, you can find exterior door sizes ranging from as narrow as 30” to as tall as 96”. If you have a double door entryway, the standard size will be 72” x 80”, or double the width of a single front door with the same height.
Exterior Front Door Standard Sizes
The standard sizes go up to 42 inches in width and 96 inches in height. What's important to consider is the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) recommendations. According to ADA, the clear width of the front door should be at least 32 inches.
The most typical standard door width is 36 inches, paired with a height of 80 inches. However, don't worry if your measurements differ — standard door sizes can range from: Width: 30 to 45 inches. Height: 71 to 96 inches.
To assure passage of people using wheelchairs, or crutches, the opening must be at least 32 inches wide. If it is not readily achievable to provide a minimum 32 inch wide opening, then the opening should be as wide as possible.
However, according to the international residential code, the minimum width for front doors should be no less than 32 inches. This door width regulation is a matter of safety precaution and ensures you comply with building codes.
A rough opening is the space in your wall where the door will be installed, and it needs to be larger than the actual door itself to accommodate the door frame, shims, and any necessary adjustments. For a standard 36-inch exterior door, the rough opening should typically be 38 inches wide and 82.5 inches tall.
The smallest standard exterior door size typically measures 30 inches wide by 80 inches tall. This size is often used for entry doors in smaller homes or as secondary doors, such as those leading to a backyard or patio.
Sidelight
A sidelight is a fixed glass panel with a frame that is mulled, or installed, on one or both sides of an exterior door. Sidelights, like doorlights, can consist of decorative or clear glass in a variety of sizes.
Standard widths include 18, 20, 24, 28, 30, 32 and 36 inches. Standard heights include 80, 84 and 96 inches. Customized sizes are available in a wide range of different designs. To measure a prehung door, remove the interior casing and measure the opening.
By ADA standards, the clear width of a door opening must be a minimum of 32 inches. This clear width measurement is taken between the face of the door and the stop of the frame with the door open to 90 degrees (Figure A). In pairs, at least one of the active leaves must comply with this clear width requirement.
ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) sets forth the following recommendations: A door requires a minimum of 32” with a maximum of 48” which would accommodate most wheelchairs. (Hallways require 36”).
What Are ADA Requirements for Doors? An ADA-compliant commercial door should create at least 32 inches of space when opened all the way. Most commercial businesses use 36-inch exterior doors which leaves plenty of room for a 32 inches of doorway clearance.

The minimum width of each door opening shall be sufficient for the occupant load thereof and shall provide a clear width of not less than 32 inches (813 mm). Clear openings of doorways with swinging doors shall be measured between the face of the door and the stop, with the door open 90 degrees (1.57 rad).
So, if you have a bedroom door that is 30″ wide (which is considered a 2/6 or 2′-6″ door) just add 2″ to the width and frame it 32″ wide.
Not all doors have a solid core though, some may only be so for an inch around the sides, before becoming hollow. We will go into specific materials below, but a general rule of thumb is that you don't want to be trimming more than two inches off any door or you may risk damaging it.
