Squirrels play an important ecological role as seed and spore dispersers. Squirrels catch, or store, seeds and nuts in the soil and trees.
Our backyards benefit from their presence. Squirrels help control plant populations by eating seeds and fruits. They are also both predators and prey.
Squirrels are an indicator of a healthy ecosystem and play an important role in it. They disperse seeds, aerate soil, control pest species populations, and finally, serve another role of providing food to carnivores. It's important to allow squirrels onto your homestead.
Remember the 5-7-9 rule. The mighty squirrel can jump… ever notice that? In order to make them physically less accessible, feeders must be placed 5 feet off the ground, 7 feet from a bush or fence and must be 9 feet from an overhanging limb.
Benefit: Assistance in Spreading Seeds
Squirrels eat seeds, and in the process, they can spread those seeds around your property and increase the biodiversity of your land. But there is just as great of a chance that some seeds they plant will grow into a weed or some other unwanted plant.
Some of the more common include tularemia, typhus, plague and ringworm. Such diseases are transmitted through bites or other forms of direct contact with infected squirrels. Tularemia, typhus and plague have symptoms that mimic the flu and can be deadly when left untreated.
Squirrels will gnaw on everything inside your house like boxes, wood, insulation, and PVC pipe, but the most concerning are electrical wires. Squirrel droppings and urine will contaminate your insulation in the attic and stain walls.
They can be quite aggressive and whilst predominantly herbivores, have been known to attack nests and eat eggs and even chicks in some parts of the world. Some birds will gladly share a feeder with other bird species, but squirrels will scare or chase away most birds and not leave until they have scoffed the lot.
Try mounting the feeder on PVC pipe, which is too slick for squirrels to climb. To increase the level of protection, run the pole through the center of a Slinky and secure it at the top of the pole, letting the lower end hang. Squirrels will try to climb the Slinky, and their weight will pull them down.
The RSPCA recommends feeding chopped apple, carrots, bean sprouts, celery, hazelnuts, or walnuts. However, the easiest way to feed squirrels is to purchase purpose made squirrel food. The squirrel food we sell consists of whole peanuts (a squirrel favourite), peanuts in shell, black sunflower and whole maise.
Squirrels can recognize individual humans based on their behavior.
Squirrels may live in your backyard or neighborhood. They are fun to watch scamper around, and you may consider that they would make cute pets. As a general rule, squirrels aren't domesticated and aren't good animals to keep as pets.
Squirrels, mice, and other small rodents have only very rarely been found to have rabies, and have never been known to transmit rabies to humans or other animals. In general, postexposure treatment is not recommended after a bite from one of these animals unless it is unusually vicious or appears obviously ill.
Squirrels are complex creatures with both positive and negative impacts on our lives and the environment. While they can be a source of entertainment and contribute to seed dispersal and pest control, they can also be a nuisance when they damage property or disrupt daily life.
Squirrels play an important ecological role as seed and spore dispersers. Squirrels catch, or store, seeds and nuts in the soil and trees. When forgotten, these seeds and nuts sprout into new plants and trees. Squirrels also spread mushrooms through their scat.
Ground squirrels injure many types of plants, carry diseases harmful to humans, and damage landscapes with their burrowing.
Other than completely smooth, extremely slippery surfaces, squirrels can climb just about anything. That means metal poles as the supports for your feeders are the beginning of any squirrel-deterrent effort.
PEX Pipe Is Vulnerable
It won't be long before these critters look for something to gnaw on. It's instinctive, especially with tree climbers like rats and squirrels.
Gray squirrels are great jumpers, as well. They can leap 6 feet or more from one branch or tree to another. They can also vault a distance of 16 feet when dropping from one limb to another. In addition, a squirrel can spring vertically from the ground at least 5 feet high.
In birding circles, it's common to hear about the 5-7-9 rule, which is something you'll definitely want to know! It refers to how you should place your feeder. The ideal spot should be 5 feet off the ground, 7 feet away from any structures (especially trees), and nothing less than 9 feet hanging above it.
Squirrels are not fans of anything spicy, so the most effective homemade squirrel repellent for garden use consists of Cayenne pepper or other peppers (even hot sauce) mixed into some water with a couple of drops of dish soap in a spray bottle.
The only true way to keep squirrels out of the garden is physical barriers. We use bird netting over hoops, which keeps squirrels out but still allows bees to pollinate.
Squirrels are an important part of the ecosystem. They are helpful pollinators that spread nuts, seeds, and spores that spawn new trees, plants, and fungus growth.
Squirrels Keep Coming Back Due to Food
After all, they have to feed themselves and their families every day! If you recently dealt with a squirrel infestation in your attic, take a look around your property to notice sources of food that might be enticing them to come back.
Damage to your home or other structures from insects, rodents (for example, rats, mice, squirrels, and chipmunks) or birds is usually not covered by a standard homeowners policy (although a window broken by a bird may be an exception).
